Parable of the laborers in the vineyard

Prepare for Mass - 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Todays Readings
The Lord is near to all who call upon him in truth - Ps 145:18.
Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near - Is 55:6
and turn away from things that are bad for us and cling to his mercy and compassion. His ways are far above our ways.
Is 55: 6-9
Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near.
Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked man his thoughts; Let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.

Arabian Chotchke

I have seen many little religious chotchke type things like this, hanging from a car mirror, or hanging in people’s homes.  All of them have quotes from the Quran or something along those lines.  This one actually says “Allah.”

Favorite Hymns - What A Friend

Joseph Scriven was born in Dublin Ireland in 1819. He was a very interesting, but compassionate person who seemed to take the Sermon on the Mount literally. At age 25, he moved to Canada and worked sawing wood. One day in Canada, a rich man saw him and wanted to hire him to cut wood for him. The rich man told his friend standing beside him, and his friend replied, “That’s Joseph Scriven. He wouldn’t cut wood for you - He only does it for those who can’t pay.” So needless to say, Scriven was a generous man who served the poor. He gave freely of all that he had.
Scriven suffered a lot of tragedy in his life. On the night he was supposed to get married, his fiancee accidentally drowned. He did fall in love again later, but his fiancee died AGAIN! She died after getting pneumonia. Later on in [...]

Thunders grow stronger

On August 21st, author, leader of the Church of God and overall religious nutjob Ronald Weinland posted an update on the upcoming armageddon. No, not the armageddon where a rock is bolting towards Earth and only Bruce Willis can save us, the Jesus-will-return-and-show-us-how-to-effectively-kill-lots-and-lots-of-people kind. Awesome.
First, before going into the purpose and content of this posting, I would like to announce that the 50th Truth has now been added to The 50 Truths of God that is in the “Publications” section of the Church website.

To make it easier on you, here’s a direct link to the 50 Truths.
Postings to this site have been minimal since April. There are several reasons for this, all of which are a matter of God’s will and God’s planning.

And here’s me thinking Weinland was just to lazy to post crap on the internet… It’s all God’s doing appereantly.
There is no purpose being served at this time [...]

SOUTH AFRICA -  “Globalization” -  September, 2008
A few weeks ago a friend approached me with a giant smile and asked, “So, what you think about Brett Favre not playing with the Packers anymore?  This whole thing must be driving you crazy!”  Of course, these words would not have been too strange if I were back in Wisconsin, but to be asked about the former Green Bay quarterback in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa?  With that one question, I was reminded of how the world is most certainly “shrinking”, and no matter where one lives around the globe, we are intimately connected in ways like never before.
There is much discussion about “globalization” in our world today, and as a result, there are numerous explanations and various understandings [...]

George Washington’s 1st Inaugural Address, ‘89

Our first President’s speech to Congress in the Spring of ‘89 speaks volumes for understanding the foundational understandings and meanings of the freedom and form we have in America. It has great implications for our approach to this fall season’s voting.
George Washington\’s First Inaugural Address, April 30, 1789
excerpts:
Such being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the public summons, repaired to the present station, it would be peculiary improper to omit in this first official act my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe; who presides in the councils of nations; and whose providential aid can supply every human defect; that his benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the People of the United States, a Government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes, and may enable every instrument employed in its administration to execute with success the functions allotted to his [...]

Cat, 67, hailed as hero for executing teenage yob

An old cat has been praised by residents of a small woodland village in Nottinghamshire for murdering a troublesome local youth.
Conner McStippleton had been a loyal and kindly member of the community before the event that led to his arrest, but was said to be sick of feeling intimidated by the yob culture which has increased significantly over the last few years.
McStippleton in 1955: A law-abiding member of the community
Weasel Mike Spineshank, 18, had been arrested over 58 times in his short lifetime for a variety of crimes including burglary, arson, and conspiracy to overturn the local council. The young ‘man’ had reportedly been singing loudly outside the village’s church during a service, whilst urinating on the legs of a disabled badger. Upon hearing the awful rendition of ‘Forever Blowing Bubbles’ - as well as the trickling of liquid - the retired feline went outside to investigate.
“It all happened very quickly,” observed hedgehog Maureen [...]

The Lesson of the Soils

In the synoptics’ parable of the sower, the one variable is the soil.  Same sower, same seed, but different soil.  The variable results therefore point to the state of the soil as a critical consideration.  I don’t intend to do anything like a full exegesis here, more of a pondering on the truth already stated.
There are implications in this for those that listen on a Sunday morning. What can be done to encourage them to come to the sermon with open and expectant hearts?  Surely there needs to be an ethos in the church that the Bible is for the church.  It’s not for academics to dissect in their ivory tower exegesis labs.  It’s for the community of God’s people in the real world, looking for real help, real insight, real spiritual food, real input from God.  This morning I enjoyed listening to a series being introduced at a good [...]
